Sound control subsystem has been completely changed in 9.10 compared to 9.04 by integrating PulseAudio controls properly into the GNOME desktop. While this improves the volume configurability someone forgot to reimplement the UI to change notification sounds per event. That is, one cannot disable Login, System Ready, Logout sounds individually without muting all sound notifications altogether. Fortunately there is a *dirty* but easy enough workaround described in the following bugreport:
